One of the most important advances in treating rheumatic diseases has been the development of a group of drugs called biologic response modifiers or biologics. Biologics are genetically engineered proteins. They inhibit the specific parts of the immune system that help to fuel inflammation, a key feature of rheumatoid arthritis, gout and other conditions. Biologics are given either by injection or by IV infusion.
